Sentences that have more words that can fit into one line of text automatically wrap into the next line. The type of text justification when wrapping occurs sometimes causes unnecessary spaces to appear in the line that are not aesthetically pleasing or linguistically correct. Hyphenation enables you to split the word at the end of a line, using a hyphen.

This fragmentation causes the sentence to wrap into the next line in a better way.

When the Kashida feature is disabled, only non-Arabic text is considered for hyphenation. And it seemed to 'look' arabic, and was in an arabic font however, no-go with the client because in Arabic letters are not just letters, they are sometimes joined for phonetic reasons sort of like ligatures but Illustrator doesn't seem to support this unless you have the 'ME' middle east edition.

The solution for me if you can call it that in the end was to do it in TextEdit with the font then blow it up to pt size, screenshot it and trace it in Illustrator, then I could at least mess with it. Edit: Thanks to there's what looks like a simpler solution that also works in Illustrator for point text it screws up if you have area text that spans more than one line, so you need to use point text then manually put line breaks in and re-order the lines of text, else the first line is at the bottom and the last is at the top.

You'll also need to set it to right-align. Basically, it seems to forcibly replace the characters with their appropriate joined ligatures.

Anyone with a paid Creative Cloud subscription now gets complete access to the entire Adobe Fonts library without any restrictions or limits.

All previous standalone Typekit plans were retired. Customers who had a Typekit plan, but not a Creative Cloud plan, were contacted by email with instructions on how to move forward. As a longtime Typekit customer, I found the name change a little weird at first. But I imagine most new users of the service are coming from other Adobe products, so from that perspective, the Adobe Fonts branding makes more sense.

Despite the official name change, the main navigation on the Adobe Fonts website still confusingly uses the language Typekit Web Fonts. I imagine they may change this in the future. Previously, Typekit limited the number of desktop fonts users were able to have synced at one time although it was possible to go over that limit without any repercussions.

If you had a website with higher traffic, you would need to upgrade to a more expensive tier that offered more pageviews. Now with Adobe Fontsthere is just a single plan that comes with all Creative Cloud subscriptions, and this plan allows unlimited pageviews.

The Phoenicians were a trading people and their cultural influence spread by sea throughout the Mediterranean world. An alphabet for writing Phoenician emerged around BC in the town of Byblos in modern-day Lebanon.

This writing system influenced a large number of later alphabets. It was also adopted by Semitic languages, including Aramaic, Nabatean, and Arabic. The old Kufi script contained seventeen letters and lacked the diacritic markings used to distinguish between letters of an identical shape or marks for vowel sounds.

Early Islam and the Spread of the Arabic Language. Over the years, the script grew in complexity as diacritical markings and ornamental accents were added. The illustration below shows the development of the Kufi script over the 7thth centuries. As Islam spread, text was used as a building block for increasingly elaborate architectural and calligraphic works.

Working with Arabic Language in Adobe Illustrator

Throughout the Islamic world, stylized forms of Kufic script began to appear on coins, ceramics, buildings, and calligraphy. Frequently, although by no means exclusively, these Kufi patterns occurred in square shapes to emphasize the clean right angles of the script.

The angular form also lent itself to easier writing on stone and other hard surfaces. While it would be quite rare today to see a newspaper or official document set in an angular Kufi font, the script has made a comeback of sorts in modern design, particularly in logos and other stylized applications.

The Thuluth script, an ancestor of many popular contemporary Arabic fonts, dates to the seventh century AD, but was codified in the ninth century under the Abbasid caliphate AD. Ibn Muqla AD unified and developed the Thuluth script and was a critical figure in the development of Arabic calligraphy as practiced throughout the Islamic world.

Born in Baghdad, Ibn Muqla served as a scribe under the Abbasid caliphate, where he administered the official library. From this post, he wrote extensively on calligraphy, emphasizing theories about the relation of letter shapes to each other. Others argue that the name refers to the bamboo pens used by Arabic calligraphers during the period. Thuluth is best distinguished by the sharp upward hook of descending letters.

It is also marked by the leftward slanting vertical strokes and the deep curves of horizontals. Letters frequently overlap and interlace, and can take on a variety of alternative shapes depending on the layout of the words.

A Thuluth design can be found on the contemporary flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The distinguishing features of Naskh script include relatively compressed letter shapes, a slight leftward lean of the text, and hooking upward strokes.

Lasting from tothe Ottoman Empire at its height controlled territory from modern-day Algeria in the west to Basra in the east, and stretched as far north into Europe as Hungary.

With its capitol in Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire united much of a fragmented Islamic world and thus exerted a centralizing force on Arabic and its writing system.

During the Ottoman Empire, several new types of Arabic script emerged that can be considered the direct ancestors of many contemporary Arabic fonts.

As its name suggests, the Diwani or Divani script was developed at the Ottoman royal court in the 16th century. Unlike the largely religious usage of Thuluth and Naskh, Diwani was mainly used for producing political and bureaucratic documents. These included proclamations, land titles, endowments, correspondence, official seals etc. The most notable features of the linkage of letters that are not ordinarily connected in Arabic and the upward slope of the lines.

The writing was highly ornamented, with blank space being filled in with ornamental flourishes. This high degree of ornamentation has given Diwani a reputation for illegibility, although it had less highly decorated variants that were more accessible.

This illegibility was often considered a feature, not a bug, during the Ottoman period as it was incredibly difficult to forge and the meaning inaccessible to all but a highly trained elite.Typefaces often called type families or font families are collections of fonts that share an overall appearance, and are designed to be used together, such as Adobe Garamond.
